Facebook Launches Chat Service

Today was the official launch of Facebook's ability to chat. Chatting is nothing new to the Internet but Facebook has created a chat option which is found at the bottom of profile pages. "A chat bar at the foot of the browser allows members to have a private conversation with one another, rather than rely on email messages or wall posts." It allows facebook users to chat with anyone of their friends who are signed in to Facebook.

This is something that doesn't surprise me because I thought it would only be a matter of time before you could Facebook chat with people. Facebook wanted to create a way for people to connect instantly and communicate most efficiently. I think it's a great idea however I have not been able to see it in use yet. Facebook users need to learn about the new feature as there is only a handful of people who have it available.

That's pretty cool I guess. It seems kinda silly right now because a lot of people, especially kids our age, are signed on AIM while they are on Facebook, so if they wanted to chat with a friend they would most likely already be doing it on AIM, but I'm sure a good amount of people will use this application.

I think that's a really good idea because sometimes people are Facebook friends but do not have or want to use each others screennames. By syncing the two services, Facebook could eliminate the need for AIM completely.

I agree with Krsytn in the sense that is a good idea but I am not sure how well it will go over. I personally would not want to sign onto a facebook chat and have an extra window and chat open when I am always signed on to AIM and do all of my chatting with my friends through that.
